Sounds like some VERY interesting stuff that you're planning on working on,
there!
You might also want to look into SNOBOL/SPITBOL, which was a predecessor
language to Icon. Some of us still use S*BOL daily in preference to Icon.
There's also a book, "Algorithms in SNOBOL4" by Gimpel (available through
Catspaw, and probably also through amazon.com) which contains a random text
generator, and some techniques probably rather relevant to your research.
